Jayson Shaw has been crowned the inaugural Hanoi Open Pool Championship winner following an inspired comeback to overcome Albin Ouschan in a deciding rack to cap off a modern-day classic in Vietnam.

Shaw was 4-0 and 10-5 behind against the two-time world champion but the world number six remained resilient, securing his maiden major title in the World Nineball Tour era and being presented the silverware by the legendary Efren Reyes.

Glasgow-born Shaw has excelled towards the business end of the season, reaching the US Open quarter-finals ten days ago and that run provided the confidence needed for him to become the Hanoi Open champion in the wonderful Vietnam.

With roughy 2,500 raucous fans packed inside the Hanoi Indoor Games Gymnasium, Shaw endured a nervy start, missing a pink four ball down the long rail in the opening rack, and further squandered opportunities allowed Ouschan to open up a 3-0 advantage.

Shaw was soon hooked tight to the six ball during an intense safety exchange in rack four but executed a sensational three-rail cut on the three ball, only to miss the seven ball using the bridge and gift his Mosconi Cup teammate a 4-0 lead.

Ouschan subsequently scratched on a combination and allowed the 2017 US Open champion to get on the board, before Shaw claimed back-to-back racks, the latter being the first break and run of the match, to reduce the deficit to 4-3.

Another potential turning point in the contest witnessed Ouschan miss a relatively routine eight ball to middle pocket as Shaw restored parity at five apiece, although the Austrian continued to display solid safety play and soon regained his two-rack buffer.

Shaw was unfortunate in his two ball attempt with the jump cue juggling the pocket as Ouschan extended his lead, before a nice escape during another safety battle followed by an opportune break and run saw him move 10-5 ahead.

An unwanted scratch off the break from Ouschan allowed Shaw back to the table, and the Brit claimed back-to-back racks. However, a brutal layout saw him welded to the four ball with the two ball over a pocket.

His deep masse escape attempt using a raised cue and vast topspin was close to coming off but Ouschan was given the chance to recoup his four-rack buffer, only to miss a long eight ball and Shaw cleaned up to reduce the arrears to 10-8.

Shaw remained resilient and patient nonetheless and continued to chip away before eventually levelling up at eleven apiece. With the two settling on the point of the middle pocket, the world number six somehow banked the ball in and ran out to set up a captivating conclusion to a fascinating contest.

A timely break and run, featuring an unbelievable five ball to middle pocket with draw for position on the six, moved him onto the hill. Shaw was in stroke and firing on all cylinders, only for a missed five ball out of nowhere to allow Ouschan to force a deciding rack.

Ouschan was breaking for the championship but the two kicked his cue ball into middle pocket and gave Shaw ball in hand with a kind layout. He cleared the table without any trouble to seal the $30,000 top prize.

Beforehand, Shaw punished an out of sorts Sanjin Pehlivanovic in the semi-finals to the loss of only two racks, having already pulled off a monumental victory over recent US Open runner-up Fedor Gorst in the quarter-finals.

Ouschan, meanwhile, received an ounce of fortune in his semi-final victory over Ko Ping-Chung, with the recent US Open champion missing the seven ball in the deciding rack after battling back from behind.

The inaugural Hanoi Open concluded Matchroom’s open championships for this season, with the famous Mosconi Cup taking place from December 6-9 at London’s iconic Alexandra Palace.
