The World 8-Ball Championship takes place from September 2-8 at the at the Claudelands Events Centre in Hamilton, New Zealand, as 64 players set their sights on the lucrative $75,000 champion’s cheque.
Shane van Boening opted against defending his title due to travel reasons, while numerous players, including WPA number one Fedor Gorst, will be snubbing WPA-sanctioned tournaments due to restrictions being imposed on players who compete on the World Nineball Tour.
Joshua Filler, Albin Ouschan and Carlo Biado therefore headline the field, with Germany’s Ralf Souquet and Taiwan’s Chang Jung-Lin, the 2008 and 2012 champions, being the only former winners involved.
In addition, semi-finalists Wojciech Szewczyk, Darren Appleton, Mario He and Alex Pagulayan will be involved, as will the likes of Pijus Labutis, Konrad Juszczyszyn, Daniel Maciol, Denis Grabe, Gerson Martinez and Alex Kazakis.
The tournament will feature 64 players in the double elimination phase which will be race-to-eight, with 16 players qualifying for the single elimination phase as the format increases to race-to-ten racks.
Free coverage will be broadcast throughout the duration of the tournament via the Billiard TV website and Pro Billiard TV on YouTube, with the semi-finals and final held on Sunday local time and the eventual champion receiving the $50,000 top prize.
