Matchroom have announced that the Mosconi Cup’s prestigious MVP award will be named in Mika Immonen’s honour from 2025 following his passing earlier this year.

Immonen won four Mosconi Cup titles in European colours, receiving the MVP award on two occasions, and the Finnish legend was also the first ever MVP back in 2003.

Also a US Open winner, world champion and hall of famer during his illustrious career, Immonen will be remembered as one of the greatest European players of all time and now receives a fitting tribute.

World Nineball Tour pundit Jeremy Jones said: “He’s actually one of the greatest players that the world of nineball has ever seen. I was fortunate and actually kind of unfortunate at times to play him so many times at the Mosconi and there were a lot of great battles.”

Karl Boyes, meanwhile, added: “I played in two Mosconis with Mika going back a few years ago. He was a player who had so much fire power, an exciting player. He was a bit like [Joshua] Filler and he was built to play in arenas like this.”

The Mosconi Cup MVP award has been won by 13 different players since being established in 2003, with the winners including Earl Strickland, Darren Appleton, Skyler Woodward, Albin Ouschan and record holder Niels Feijen.

Feijen has won the award on four separate occasions, including three years in a row between 2013 and 2015, while Jayson Shaw or Joshua Filler could equal his record this year.
