Aloysius Yapp produced a relentless performance to suppress Jonas Souto Comino in an 13-1 rout to win the UK Open Pool Championship and land his maiden major accolade on the World Nineball Tour.
Yapp pocketed the $40,000 top prize at the Telford International Centre and scuppered Souto Comino’s sensational run to a maiden major showpiece, compiling eight break and runs, breaking well and utilising ideal layouts to perfection.
The world number five won the lag and got off the mark with a superb seven-nine combination, before a four-pack helped Yapp keep his opponent rooted to his seat and therefore develop an unassailable 6-0 ascendancy.
Souto Comino did receive opportunities in racks seven and eight, although he squandered a tough two-nine combination and endured a positional error, as Yapp edged closer to dishing out a bagel.
Yapp continued to surge towards the trophy as he moved into an 11-0 lead, before a rare dry break gifted the Souto Comino an opportunity. He was unable to emerge through a safety battle nonetheless and that allowed Yapp to move onto the cusp of victory.
Fortunately to Souto Comino, he was able to avoid the whitewash following a dry break and a scratch from his opponent, although the Spaniard returned the favour and broke dry in what proved to be the final rack as Yapp cleaned up to prevail.
Beforehand, Singapore’s Yapp received an ounce of fortune in his semi-final comeback against Tyler Styer, fluking a timely two ball at the business end to emerge a 10-8 victor in a closely-contested match.
Souto Comino produced a tremendous performance to overcome Mickey Krause 11-5 and cap off a breakthrough week with a maiden major final, having notably compiled a six-pack in his last 16 win over Mateusz Sniegocki.
