The Philippines Open Pool Championship will take place from October 21-25 at the Gateway Mall in Quezon City as 128 players compete in the tournament’s inaugural staging.
Two days after Asia inflicted a Reyes Cup rout on the Rest of the World in Mania, attentions quickly turn to the Philippines Open, which yields a $125,000 prize fund and concludes this year’s Mosconi Cup qualifying race.
World number one Fedor Gorst and reigning world champion Carlo Biado will headline the lineup in the City of Stars, alongside the likes of Francisco Sanchez Ruiz and Johann Chua.
Newly-crowned Hanoi Open champion Pijus Labutis travels onto the Philippines, while David Alcaide, Peri Open winner Moritz Neuhausen, Mickey Krause and Jonas Souto Comino are also amongst the top 16 stars in action.
Other notable entrants include Jayson Shaw, Robbie Capito, Duong Quoc Hoang, Denis Grabe, Emil Gangflot, Alex Pagulayan, Naoyuki Oi, Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann, while the Americans involved include Skyler Woodward and Billy Thorpe.
The legendary Efren Reyes will compete at 71 years of age, 31 years after winning the US Open Championship, while 2010 world champion Francisco Bustamante will also return to competitive action.
Dennis Orcollo, Jefrey Roda, Bernie Regalario, Jeffrey Ignacio, Anton Raga and Michael Baoanan will also be amongst a strong Filipino contingent, although expect shocks as the Philippines is a country filled with unearthed talents.
Differing from Matchroom’s usual open championships, the Philippines Open will involve less players and be single elimination throughout, while it will be race-to-10 racks through to the quarter-finals.
The semi-finals and final will take place on Saturday, October 25 across two sessions, with the format being race-to-11 racks for the semi-finals and race-to-13 racks for the final.
Coverage of the main table and tables two and three will be broadcast via WNT TV for subscribers throughout the week, while a free table four stream will be available on the Matchroom Pool YouTube channel. OneSports will show coverage in the Philippines.
