The Hanoi Open Pool Championship returns for its third staging from October 7-12 at the Hanoi Indoor Games Gymnasium, with 256 players competing for the $40,000 top prize in the Vietnamese capital.
Defending champion Johann Chua and 2023 winner Jayson Shaw have both experienced the feeling of reigning victorious in front of a raucous 3,000-strong crowd, and their adversaries will be attempting to follow in their footsteps at one of the most anticipated events of the year.
World number one Fedor Gorst, who recoups his celebrity status each time he returns to Vietnam, headlines the $200,000 tournament alongside the likes of reigning world champion Carlo Biado, US Open winner Aloysius Yapp and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz.
Vietnamese superstar Duong Quoc Hoang returns to the Hanoi Open in search of home glory, while other notable entrants include recent Peri Open winner Moritz Neuhausen, David Alcaide, Mickey Krause, Jonas Souto Comino and Pijus Labutis.
Filipinos Bernie Regalario, Jefrey Roda and Jeffrey Ignacio will also compete in Hanoi, as will the likes of former world champion Niels Feijen, Robbie Capito, Emil Gangflot, Max Lechner, Aleksa Pecelj, Skyler Woodward, Tyler Styer and Mohammad Soufi.
Vietnam’s strongest hopes aside from Duong are in the hands of Nguyen Anh Tuan, Luong Duc Thien and Bui Truong An, while Indonesia will also be strongly-represented by brothers Albert and Andri Januarta and Edward Koyongian.
Despite a strong field having assembled in Hanoi, four of the world’s top ten have skipped Hanoi in order to compete at the colliding World 8-Ball Championship, namely Joshua Filler, Eklent Kaci, Ko Pin-Yi and Shane van Boening.
The double elimination phase will take place from October 7-9, with 64 players then progressing to the single elimination phase which begins on October 10.
It will be race-to-nine racks on the winners’ side and race-to-eight racks on the one-loss side during double elimination, before the format increases to race-to-10 racks for the last 64 through to the quarter-finals.
The semi-finals and final will take place on Sunday, October 12 across two sessions, with the format being race-to-11 racks for the semi-finals and race-to-13 racks for the championship match.
Coverage of the main table and tables two and three will be broadcast via WNT TV for subscribers throughout the week, while a free table four stream will be available on the Matchroom Pool YouTube channel.
Update: The opening rounds of the Hanoi Open were postponed on Tuesday, October 7 due to flooding and adverse weather conditions in the Vietnamese capital
