Fedor Gorst endured a shock early exit at the World 10-Ball Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam following successive defeats at the hands of Jonas Souto Comino and Edwin Gamas.
Gorst was handed a brutal opening round draw against UK Open runner-up Souto Comino and was beaten in straight sets, meaning he was banished straight onto the one-loss side.
The two-time world champion claimed the opening set against Filipino qualifier Gamas, although a costly dry break in the seventh rack of the second set forced a decider.
Gorst overturned a 2-0 deficit in the all-important set, only for a missed four ball in the fifth rack to prove costly and allow Pasig City’s Gamas to pull off the biggest victory of his career.
Meanwhile, defending champion Carlo Biado battled back from the brink of defeat to deny Germany’s Stefan Kasper in a shootout, prevailing from one set and two racks down to get his title defence off and running.
Joshua Filler and two-time champion Eklent Kaci both suffered defeats in their opening matches at the hands of Lee Van Corteza and Ali Al-Obaidli respectively, but bounced back with wins over Kristian Mrva and Felix Vogel.
Vietnamese hero Duong Quoc Hoang overcame both Marco Spitzky and Thorsten Hohmann to commence his campaign in his hometown, while Phuong Nam Pham beat Casper Matikainen and Mieszko Fortunski to remain undefeated.
