US Open Pool Championship 2025 odds and tips: Betting preview as Van Boening eyes number six

The prestigious US Open Pool Championship will be staged from August 18-23 at the Harrah’s Resort and Casino as the sport’s most historic tournament returns for its 48th edition.

Defending champion Fedor Gorst has been installed as a 7/1 favourite with leading bookmakers, with five-time champion Shane van Boening (8/1), Joshua Filler (10/1), Carlo Biado (14/1), Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (14/1) and Aloysius Yapp (16/1) amongst the title favourites.

  • Shane van Boening to win the US Open Championship – 8/1 Ladbrokes
  • Jefrey Roda to win the US Open Championship – 40/1 E/W Bet365 1/2
  • Duong Quoc Hoang to win the US Open Championship – 66/1 E/W Ladbrokes 1/2
  • Vitaliy Patsura to win the US Open Championship – 125/1 E/W Bet365 1/2

Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp could achieve an outrageous feat and complete a hat-trick of open championships in succession following his UK Open and Florida Open triumphs, although the legendary Shane van Boening will attract all the attention once more as his seemingly everlasting quest for number six resumes.

Ever since Van Boening defeated the late Chang Jung-Lin in the 2016 US Open Championship final, there’s only been one topic of conversation heading into the sport’s most historic tournament. Van Boening may never surpass Earl Strickland’s record, but it remains the one thing left to accomplish in his glittering career.

Van Boening entered last year’s tournament in blistering form and was only stopped by world number one Gorst in an incredible final. It’s a similar scenario for him this time around, having reached back-to-back finals at the Florida Open and Battle of the Bull. SVB is hitting the balls well, has his break locked in and when that happens, it will take something extraordinary to overcome him.

Finland’s Arseni Sevastyanov, a former European U23 9-ball silver-medalist, could provide SVB with ideal preparation for what lies ahead in the second round, and did beat Sanjin Pehlivanovic in Orlando. Brandon Shuff and Billy Ussery Jr are also in Van Boening’s section, but it would be a seismic shock if he didn’t qualify for the final 64 untouched.

Besides the aforementioned Florida Open providing further optimism that this year could be Van Boening’s time to create history, it also proved to be something of a humbling for players from the Philippines after seven of them reached the World Championship last 16 at the end of July.

You’d imagine that they will be back with a vengeance and when the stakes are high, the Filipinos typically justify themselves as a considerable force to be reckoned with. Following in the footsteps of 1994 champion Efren Reyes and 2021 winner Carlo Biado will be a dream realised for many.

Jefrey Roda (40/1) has reached more WNT major quarter-finals than anyone else since last year’s US Open and is perhaps the best player at present without a major title to his name. He’s knocking on the door and it’s only a matter of time before that door moves ajar.

Roda is one of the most technically-gifted players on the tour and his pedigree has been showcased in victories over the likes of Joshua Filler and Johann Chua in recent majors. Plus, you don’t reach World Championship and US Open quarter-finals in a 12-month timeframe if you’re not a special player.

Opening his campaign against Peri Open quarter-finalist Nguyen Hoang Tuan, Roda will be given a good workout in his first round match versus one of Vietnam’s best players. He could also face Lukas Fracasso-Verner during the early rounds, although he’s expected to comfortably reach the last 64.

Meanwhile, Duong Quoc Hoang (66/1) travels to Atlantic City fresh from a run to the Battle of the Bull semi-finals, where he notably overcame world number one Fedor Gorst, and the Vietnamese number one has therefore gathered momentum heading into one of the biggest weeks of the season.

Despite receiving a reasonably precarious draw that could see him face China Open runner-up Hayato Hijikata and recent Florida Open semi-finalist Chang Yu-Lung in double elimination, Duong has all the shots in his locker and is more than capable of becoming his country’s first major champion. It would erupt in Vietnam if he did achieve greatness.

Some of the most propitious outsiders were handed brutal draws for the early rounds. Poland’s Wojciech Szewczyk received a potential path of Corey Deuel, Antonis Brabin and Lee Van Corteza to reach the last 64, while his compatriot Daniel Maciol was drawn into the same section as Niels Feijen, Hsieh Chia-Chen and Masato Yoshioka.

Marvin Asis is another Filipino player making waves, having reached the Florida Open last 16, although he could face either Jan van Lierop or Gregorio Sanchez in round two prior to a potential third round encounter with world number three Aloysius Yapp.

Florida Open semi-finalist Mickey Krause and Hungary’s Oliver Szolnoki were pitted into the same section, while Lithuania’s Pijus Labutis potential path involves highly-rated American Sergio Rivas, Cristian Surdea or Flavian Glont and then possibly Hunter Lombardo or Alex Pagulayan.

Despite steering clear of those names because of their tricky draws, Ukraine’s Vitaly Patsura (125/1), who was selected here for the Florida Open, is too tempting to pass over once again. The two-time Texas Open winner could encounter former champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz in winners’ qualification should both remain unscathed.

Patsura endured an early exit in Orlando, although reaching the quarter-finals twelve months ago in Atlantic City will provide fond memories for him. The Ukrainian is good friends with Fedor Gorst and plays a similar game to him. He’s someone simmering beneath the surface and conceivably a major champion-in-waiting.
