The fourth staging of the UK Open Pool Championship takes place from May 6-11 at the Telford International Centre as 256 players compete in the second World Nineball Tour major of the season.
Hong Kong’s Robbie Capito will be defending his title, having beaten Poland’s Mieszko Fortunski 13-10 in last year’s final, with some of pool’s best professionals and amateurs colliding in an attempt to seal the $40,000 top prize.
In the absence of world number one Fedor Gorst, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz and Shane van Boening, former champions Joshua Filler and Eklent Kaci are the household names involved alongside Reyes Cup stars Aloysius Yapp and Carlo Biado.
In addition, British number one Jayson Shaw will be vying to capture the UK Open crown for the first time, while Spain’s David Alcaide, Premier League champion Moritz Neuhausen and European Open winner Mickey Krause are also amongst those involved.
Poland will be strongly represented as usual by the likes of Wiktor Zielinski, Wojciech Szewczyk, Daniel Maciol, Konrad Juszczyszyn and last year’s runner-up Fortunski, with each of them competing to become the first-ever Polish winner of a Matchroom Open Championship.
Other notable entrants include 2014 world champion Niels Feijen, European Open runner-up Naoyuki Oi, Anton Raga, Vietnam’s Duong Quoc Hoang, Spain’s Jonas Souto Comino and last year’s semi-finalists Pijus Labutis and Petri Makkonen.
Mosconi Cup captain Skyler Woodward leads the American contingent to the UK with crucial ranking points up for grabs. Tyler Styer, Shane Wolford, Lukas Fracasso-Verner, Sam Henderson and Nathan Childress are amongst the Americans in action.
The double elimination phase will take place from May 6-8, with 64 players then progressing to the single elimination phase which begins on May 9.
It will be race-to-nine racks on the winners’ side and race-to-eight racks on the one-loss side during double elimination, before the format increases to race-to-10 racks for the last 64 through to the quarter-finals.
The semi-finals and final will take place on Sunday, May 11 across two sessions, with the format being race-to-11 racks for the semi-finals and race-to-13 racks for the title decider.
Coverage will be broadcast via WNT TV for subscribers in most territories across the world, including the USA, Vietnam and the Philippines, as well as the UK and Ireland for the first four days before Sky Sports show the weekend’s action.
