The China Open 9-Ball Championship takes place from September 18-22 at the Tangzhen Cultural and Sports Centre in Shanghai, as the world’s elite compete in one of the biggest WPA-sanctioned events.
Joshua Filler and three-time winner Han Yu will be defending their respective men’s and women’s titles in China, with this year’s men’s champion receiving $40,000 and the women’s winner pocketing $36,000.
Despite numerous players having decided to boycott events associated with the WPA, a strong field of players have assembled in Shanghai, including the likes of Carlo Biado, Naoyuki Oi, Sanjin Pehlivanovic and Alex Kazakis.
Poland will be strongly represented as World Pool Championship semi-finalist Wojciech Szewczyk, Daniel Maciol, Konrad Juszcyszyn and Mieszko Fortunski have travelled, while 2012 champion Dennis Orcollo and China’s own Dang Jinhu are also amongst the notable names.
Meanwhile, women’s world number one Chou Chieh-Yu headlines the female field, which is a star-studded one and features the likes of three-time champion Chen Siming and newly-crowned women’s world champion Rubilen Amit.
Chezka Centeno, Kristina Tkach and Pia Filler will also be involved, as will the likes of Wei Tzu-Chien, 2013 winner Liu Shasha, Jasmin Ouschan, Kristina Zlateva, Seo Seoa and Chen Chia-Hua.
The format will be double elimination until the last 32 in the men’s and the last 16 in the women’s tournament, with alternate break and race-to-seven racks, before increasing to race-to-eleven for the single elimination phase.
The tournament will see matches played in accordance with the current WPA rules and regulations, nine ball on the spot, no break box and the three-point rule will be enforced.
It will be streamed via Chinese social media, and somewhat available to overseas viewers via the Billiard Pool VN YouTube channel.
